Courses for Parents with Children who
have Additional Needs
123 Magic
This four session programme is for parents of children aged 4-12 who have behavioural difficulties or challenging behaviours. It looks at these behaviours and introduces rules for counting and time out, including positive reinforcement and the importance of routines. Individual 23 Magic plans are formulated with each parent, with a reminder that self preservation and their care needs are important too.
“The facilitators were very friendly and understanding; giving us all time and space to talk about our concerns and difficulties”.
Parenting an Additional Needs Child aged 2-12
This seven session programme focuses on parental emotions of having a child with special needs. It explores coping with difficult feelings, whole family impacts (with particular emphasis on siblings) and finding solutions and strategies to lessen isolation and work successfully with professionals. It also looks how to plan ahead with confidence.
“It was good to meet other parents and share experiences about having a special needs child with those who understood”
Parenting a Special Needs Teenager Through Transition to Adult Services
Moving on to the world of adults can be a daunting prospect for teenager and parent alike. This eight session programme focuses on the welfare of the young person, including daily living skills and the implications for and emotional responses of all family members. It explores how children’s needs change as they approach adulthood, how to keep young people safe but also let them grow up. Adjusting ambitions to meet realities are examined as well as exploring the options and opportunities that exist and how to manage any fears around these changes.
“It was very special to be in a peer group where it was safe to laugh and explore with them. I wanted to hide transition away and not look at it, but I can face it all now”.
